Albani's plaster is likely based on one of his own marble reproductions of the antique original which was previously housed in the Villa Borghese, Rome and now resides in the Louvre, Paris. Verus, born AD 130-169, co-ruled Rome from AD 161-69 alongside his adopted twin Marcus Aurelius. Unlike Marcus, however, Verus proved weak and self-indulgent, struggling as an administrator.
