Lucio Calpurnio Pisone, known as the Pontiff, was a politician and military commander of the Empire. He was the son of Lucio Calpurnio Pisone Cesonino (consul in 58 BC), a member of the plebeian family Pisoni, belonging to the gens Calpurnia. Noted for being one of the most capable collaborators of the emperor, he was appointed consul in 15 BC. In 14 BC, an uprising by Thracian tribes required his immediate intervention in Thrace. Accompanied by a couple of legions, he stayed there for three years of uninterrupted wars (from 12 to 10 BC), after which he earned the ornaments triumphalia. The operations in Thrace constituted the logical completion of the broader operations for the conquest of the entire Illyro-Balkan area, initiated by Agrippa in 13 BC and completed by Tiberius between 12 and 9 BC. A few years later, he held the office of proconsul of Asia, and from 12 AD was appointed praefectus urbi, a position he held until his death, which occurred in 32 AD.
