LuciferArtistJacob Epstein (1880-1959)Date1945MediumBronzeDimensionsxAccession #1947P81CreditPresented by the Seven Pillars of Wisdom Trust, 1947 Epstein's bold sculpture was sparked by John Milton's masterpiece 'Paradise Lost'. It portrays the archangel Lucifer, a bringer of radiant light and the most beautiful of all angels. Unafraid to challenge God's power, Lucifer took a bold step that ultimately led to his downfall in Hell. Epstein masterfully captures Lucifer with his hands extended downwards towards the fiery depths of Hell. By combining a female model for the head and a male model for the body, Epstein skillfully creates an intentionally ambiguous figure.
