This type of ceramic lantern was produced in the Syrian-Palestinian region between the 5th and 8th centuries AD. Its features include a vessel with an almond-shaped form and angled profile, a wide rim decorated with animal, vegetable, or geometric motifs in relief, a central large feeding opening, and a flat channel that ends at the tip where the wick hole is located. Opposite the tip is a conical protuberance (handle). The base is flat, following the shape of the vessel, and surrounded by raised lines. This example is a variation of the general type and has a concave disc in the center and a small feeding opening circled by a four-petaled flower in relief. The rim is decorated with four animal figures in relief: on each side, a lion chases a gazelle. The scene is completed by palm trees and isolated leaves that make up the typical landscape of the region. Text: Professor Maria Isabel D'Agostino Fleming Scan: Dr. Alex Martire www.larp.mae.usp.br
