Lucerna norte-africana paleocristã (III-V d.C.)
sketchfab
This type of ceramic lantern originated in North Africa and was produced between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD. It is included in the category of paleochristian lanterns due to the frequent occurrence of Christian symbols in its ornamentation. Its production reached a significant proportion and was exported throughout the Mediterranean basin. The characteristics are a pear-shaped container, with a wide rim featuring printed decoration, a broad channel reaching the beak, and relief representation on the concave central disc. A full handle extends as a protuberance to the base. This is formed by a raised annulus. The example is decorated in the central disc with the monogram of Christ and the relief cross, with rosettes on the arms and upper part, and a bird in the lower part. The rim receives the same decoration: a row of rosettes on either side with birds at the ends. Text: Prof. Dr. Maria Isabel D'Agostino Fleming Scan: Dr. Alex Martire www.larp.mae.usp.br
