LP Record Wall Mount with 3M Command Strips

thingiverse

There are many LP record wall mount options on Thingiverse, but none of them satisified my brother's needs. He wanted the following features: - Attached with 3M Command Strips (No screws!) - Supports the record in the centre to directly support the weight of the record - Held in place at the top and bottom to stop them being bumped off - Can easily remove and insert new records whilst leaving mounts in place - Cover up as little as the LP as possible - Accommodate his and his wife's collection which have varying widths and heights. - Accommodate double albums Visually, I personally the look of record mounts that sit in the corners of the records, but I have heard that over time the weight of the record can tear or damage the sleeve. This is the design we came up with. The mounts come in 3 sizes based on the 3 readily available 3M command strip sizes. The Command Strip sizes that these mounts are made for are as follows (just the sticky area, not including the pull tab): - Large Command Strip (74 x 18 mm) - Medium Command Strip (52 x 16 mm) - Small Command Strip (28 x 16 mm) We tested with the large and medium Command Strips and the medium performed fine and were less obtrusive so that is what I recommend. According to the Command Strip specifications, all sizes appear to be plenty strong enough to hold up double record albums. I wouldn't recommend using the small Command Strips, unless you only intend to put the sleeve on the wall without the record in it. That isn't because of it's holding capacity, but because it will be harder to balance the record on the shorter mount and it is more likely to lean. YMMV. There are 3 different mounting pieces for each size: bottom, centre and top. For each column you mount on the wall, you will need one bottom mount and one top mount, plus one centre piece for every record after the first. When the mounts are correctly installed on your wall, inserting or removing a record is simple. To insert a record, hold it at a slight angle with the top leaning towards the wall, slide the top edge of the record up into the top or centre mount, push the bottom of the record towards the wall so that it is vertical, then carefully lower the record into the bottom mount which will hold the weight of the record. To remove a record, simply slide up, pull out slightly at the bottom then slide it down and out. There was a lot of variation in the size of the record sleeves. When mounting you need to calculate the vertical distance between mounts so that it will hold your shortest and tallest records. We found there were two outliers that the mounts did not work for in terms of easily inserting or removing a record as they were taller than the others. I could have made the centre and top mounts larger to accommodate the two outliers, but decided instead to leave them at this size. For these very large sleeves, my brother can slide those records in and out from the side. When printing, in your slicer rotate the mount so that an end is sitting on the print bed. Not only does this mean you don't need any supports, but the layers are perpendicular to the records which will make the mount stronger. If bed adhesion is an issue for you, also make sure to rotate the mount so that the longest part of the print is aligned along your printer's Y-axis. This helps reduce the amount of wobble which can be caused when the bed slides backwards and forwards along the Y-axis.
