This magnificent Renaissance masterpiece came into being between 1501 and 1504. As a striking example of marble sculpture art, it measures 14.0 feet in height and takes on the likeness of the heroic Biblical figure David as a majestic standing nude male form. Commissioned by Opera del Duomo for its esteemed Cathedral of Florence, it was part of an elaborate project envisioning several giant statues strategically positioned high up on the cathedral's tribunes, nearly eighty meters off the ground. In a testament to his extraordinary talent and artistic vision, Michelangelo took over the incomplete project, one that had been initially begun in 1464 by Agostino di Duccio before being carried forward by Antonio Rossellino in 1475. However, both renowned sculptors were left uninspired due to a multitude of imperfections found within a colossal block of marble, dubbed "taroli," which might have put the entire monumental work at risk of structural instability. Thus, this impressive yet oversized chunk of precious white marble sat idly by for a span of twenty-five long years before it was finally transformed into one of the greatest works of Renaissance art the world has ever known.
