After falling short in my pursuit of an extruder carriage with all the features I was seeking, I finally decided to create my own design. This project is still a work in progress and I will continue to add new features as time goes on. Below, you'll find a list of features, their current status in the design, and a detailed description. You can learn more about this project on my personal blog - https://camdenkrupala.com/2017/07/27/building-a-better-3d-printer-carriage-adventures-in-modeling-magnets-and-auto-leveling/ Features: - Maximizing Z Height: I want to minimize the carriage's height by offsetting the titan mounting fin. - Interchangeable Bearing Mounts: Aluminum cased Igus Drylin Linear Bearing mounts are a great choice, as they can be easily swapped with LM8UU bearings. Zip-tie mounting is quick and effective, making it easy to prototype and test different configurations. - Auto-Leveling Mount: I'm investigating ways to mount the BL Touch off the Aero aluminum fin block in line with the extruder nozzle. My goal is to do this without blocking the fan's airflow. - Cable Management System: A custom PCB with a 16-pin Molex Microfit connector will help consolidate all the cabling, making it easier to manage and troubleshoot issues. I'm also planning to add a 2-pin radial cooling fan for easy removal. - Magnetic Fan Mount: I'm looking into ways to magnetically couple the fan to the carriage for easy alignment and removal when changing nozzles.
