The vehicle was later modified and built by Volkswagen during World War II as a lightweight military vehicle for use by the German military (Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS). Based heavily on the Volkswagen Beetle, it underwent several design changes and became known internally as the Type 82. The term KÜbelwagen is derived from KÜbelsitzwagen, which means "bucket-seat car." This was because German light military vehicles with no doors featured bucket seats to prevent passengers from falling out. Early VW test models had no doors and were fitted with bucket seats, earning them the nickname VW KÜbelsitzwagen, later shortened to KÜbelwagen. Mercedes-Benz, Opel, and Tatra also built similar vehicles. With its rolling chassis built in Wolfsburg and body built by US-owned firm Ambi Budd Presswerke in Berlin, the KÜbelwagen was an important vehicle for the German military, similar to the Jeep or GAZ-67 used by the Allies.
