Four German battalions operated with Sturmpanzer Brummbar early models, namely the Sturmpanzer-Abteilungen 216, 217, 218, and 219. Each battalion saw significant action during WW2, including in Kursk and Anzio, Normandy and Eastern Europe. As part of an independent battalion, Sturmpanzer Abteilung 216 first engaged the Soviet army at Kursk where it played a key role forming the fourth battalion of Panzerjager 656 near Ponyri, followed by subsequent actions in the Orel region against a Soviet offensive. Two companies comprised Brummbar units. One such unit, Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 216 formed as part of Panzerjaeger 656, operated with distinction at Kursk and later saw extensive service in Anzio, fighting all the way north until forced to surrender in April 1945. A notable highlight during their journey came at Orel, where Sturmpanzer-Abteilung fought against the advancing Soviet forces in an effort to halt their momentum near Ponyri. A key player among the four German battalions that operated Brummbars was Sturmpanzer Abteilung 217, whose military journey began with deployment into Normandy. Due to mechanical difficulties during transit to the battle area around Caen, many vehicles malfunctioned but some survived the subsequent Allied push near Falaise whereupon a large segment of surviving members managed to evade encirclement, later fighting as part of the Ardennes campaign in December 1944. However, they never broke through at St Vith despite significant attempts. Eventually, these German forces found themselves under siege once more, captured after the Allies closed their trap around the Ruhr pocket on April 2, 1945, thus concluding their World War II military campaigns.
