Opel Blitz trucks hold a significant place in history, particularly given Opel's position as Germany's largest truck manufacturer leading up to World War II. Interestingly, the term "Blitz" emerged from a prize competition held in 1930 and was initially applied to the 1931 model. By 1934, four base models of the 1-tonne version were available alongside 14 larger versions weighing between 2 tonnes and 2.5 tonnes. Following orders from Nazi authorities to expand re-armament efforts in 1935, over 130,000 Blitz trucks and chassis were produced at Opelwerk Brandenburg facilities until production ceased in 1944. Original engines featured in medium-weight Blitz models came equipped with a flathead petrol engine from GM's 1930 Buick Marquette line, which was later upgraded to an overhead valve straight-six engine starting in 1937. Interestingly, the replacement engine found widespread adoption across both Opel Admiral passenger vehicles and Chevrolet engines produced during the same period. Consequently, retreating German forces abandoned Blitzes, which could then be restored to operation by advancing Allied forces using available Chevy/GMC and Bedford parts.
