After US entry into World War II and the formation of the Tank Destroyer Force, a suitable vehicle was needed to equip the new battalions. By November 1941, the Army requested a vehicle with a gun in a fully rotating turret after other interim models were criticized for being poorly designed. The prototype of the M10 was conceived early 1942 and delivered April that year. After appropriate changes made to the hull and turret were completed, the modified version selected for production in June 1943 as the 3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10 was the result. It mounted a 3-inch gun m7 on rotating turret using a modified Sherman tank chassis. The alternative model M10A1 used an M4a3 Sherman tank and also produced, though not immediately known how many would be in supply when shipped overseas. First engagements came in Tunisia during early springtime as part of operations, the German tank army found out the Wolverines to hold strong ground under enemy tanks that outnumbered theirs in certain regions where terrain could work against an open-top model exposed.
