Human beings design guns to launch a variety of projectiles pneumatically at distant targets. Most guns shoot solid projectiles but some models discharge liquid projectiles like water or even charged particles like those in plasma guns. In addition, these projectiles can fly freely as with bullets and artillery shells or remain attached to strings like spearguns or harpoon guns. The methods used to propel the projectiles vary depending on the design, typically employing high gas pressure within a shooting tube (gun barrel). This high pressure is usually produced by rapid combustion of propellants or through mechanical compression as seen in air guns. The pressurized gas then accelerates the projectile down the tube giving it sufficient speed to travel towards its target after escaping the barrel. However, electromagnetic field generation is another alternative that replaces the need for a shooting tube with guide rails as in railguns or magnetic coils as in coilguns. Gun technology began evolving around 1000 CE in China where initial versions of these devices were developed. Within a few centuries this innovation spread to Asia and Europe by the 13th century.
