One of my game's classes excels at inflicting high-distance damage with the aid of animals - specifically birds. This unit can train up to five birds, each possessing unique skills and attributes. The birds provide a defensive benefit when this unit takes damage from an enemy. It's a fresh approach to tactical RPG gameplay I have in mind.
