The Invasion of Poland revealed that towed sIG 33 guns attached to infantry gun companies of motorized infantry regiments struggled to keep pace with tanks in combat. A simple solution was to modify a spare tank chassis to transport it into battle. A sIG 33 was mounted on the Panzer I Ausf. B's chassis, complete with carriage and wheels, instead of turret and superstructure. Plates measuring 13 millimeters thick formed an open-topped fighting compartment at the front of the hull. This protected only the gun and the gunner from small arms fire and shell fragments, leaving loaders completely exposed. A separate vehicle carried the ammunition, as there was no room on board. The sIG 33 had a total traverse of 25 degrees when mounted and could elevate between -4 and +75 degrees. The Rblf36 sight was used by the gun. The chassis was severely overburdened, leading to frequent breakdowns. The vehicle's extreme height and lack of onboard ammunition made it a significant tactical drawback. Thirty-eight vehicles were manufactured in February 1940 by Alkett.
