Unlike the contemporary perspective on ghouls as merely more intelligent, flesh-devouring undead creatures, Lovecraft's ghouls were indeed animate beings. Repulsive, cannibalistic, and grotesque, yet alive they stood. Still, they inhabited graveyards and feasted on the decaying bodies of the deceased, a gruesome habit that defined their existence.
