This sculpture group was commissioned in 1754 for the gardens of the Château de Bellevue to portray "The Marquise de Pompadour as Friendship". Cupid lies helpless on the ground, his bow and quiver discarded, as he warmly embraces Friendship without hesitation. The figure of Friendship is portrayed with perfect beauty: her simple dress, bare breast, and arms overflowing with flowers are all symbolic attributes of a true friend. However, the face of this goddess bears no resemblance to Madame de Pompadour's likeness.
