Portrait of Louis XVI of France crafted by a skilled but unidentified French artist and showcased at the Palazzo Pitti. Louis XVI, also referred to as (until 1774) Louis-Auguste, duc de Berry, (born August 23, 1754, Versailles, France—died January 21, 1793, Paris), ruled France from 1774 until 1792, marking the end of the Bourbon monarchy's reign prior to the French Revolution in 1789. The monarchy was formally abolished on September 21, 1792; subsequently, Louis and his queen consort, Marie-Antoinette, were beheaded by guillotine due to charges of counterrevolution.
