Louis XV as Jupiter at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
Nicolas Coustou crafts a marble masterpiece, completed in 1731, depicting Louis XV as the powerful Zeus. Standing alongside is Marie Leszczynska's likeness, created to accompany her husband in the artwork commissioned by the Duke of Antin, General Director of Royal Buildings. This magnificent work was ordered in 1725 for the Duke's chateau in Petit-Bourg to adorn its gardens and parks. After the Duke's passing, these statues found a new home within the royal domain of Versailles. Nearby, one can spot the symbols of Zeus and Hera, king and queen of the gods: the majestic eagle and the vibrant peacock.
