Louis François Roubilliac, a sculptor born in Lyons, arrived in London in 1730. He made his name with the famous statue of Handel as Apollo, erected in Vauxhall Gardens in 1738, now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Roubilliac was England's leading exponent of the rococo style in sculpture, celebrated for busts that showcase a remarkable feeling for character, varied design, movement, and exquisite modeling.
