The Hacienda San Lucas grounds boast a prominent natural rock formation known as Los Sapos, situated directly south of the Copan Acropolis between the valley's eastern and westernmost stelae. This area is home to numerous freestanding toad sculptures that were once popular in rural regions surrounding the valley. These enigmatic figures are believed to have played a significant role in an early folk religion or fertility cult, thriving throughout the Late Classic period. The largest known toad sculpture, aptly nicknamed "the King Toad," is carved directly into the Los Sapos rock outcrop. Alongside the amphibian icon, other animals and a mysterious figure performing self-mutilation by penis perforation are depicted in the intricate carvings that adorn this natural landmark.
