Los Angeles, officially known as the City of Angels and often shortened to its initials L.A., serves as the cultural, financial, and commercial heart of Southern California. With an estimated U.S. Census population of 3,976,322 in 2016, it is the second-largest city in the United States, following New York City, and the largest city in California. In 1848, at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and the remainder of California were purchased under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. On April 4, 1850, Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality, five months preceding California's statehood. Known as the City of Angels, Los Angeles is renowned for its Mediterranean climate, diverse ethnic community, and expansive metropolis. The city is also one of the country's leading economic powerhouses, boasting a diverse economy encompassing numerous professional and cultural sectors. Furthermore, Los Angeles serves as home to Hollywood, a pivotal center within the global entertainment industry. Ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index, it functions as a global city.
