Clement XIV, Pope from 1769 to 1774, is widely recognized for spearheading the Museo Pio Clementino at the Vatican. This impressive collection showcased an extensive array of antique sculpture excavated by renowned English dealer and antiquary Thomas Jenkins, along with Scottish neoclassical painter and dealer Gavin Hamilton. Both significant figures significantly contributed to Hewetson's career advancement. With its exceptional craftsmanship, this outstanding bust played a pivotal role in establishing Hewetson as the leading portrait sculptor in Rome during the 1770s.
