According to the Lokapannatti text, Ashoka sent Upagupta to tame Mara during an enshrinement ceremony festival. Afterward, Upagupta asked Mara to take the physical form of Buddha so everyone at the festival could see what Buddha looked like. Upagupta's teacher was Sanavasi, a disciple of Ānanda, the Buddha's attendant. Due to his name not being in Theravada literature, it is assumed that Upagupta was a Sarvāstivādin monk. Rabindranath Tagore wrote a poem called 'Abhisar' about Upagupta. In the story, Upagupta nurses a woman named Vasavdatta who had been cast out of her town due to a disease. Upagupta's legend has inspired many artists and writers throughout history. He is described as a great teacher in Transmission of Light by Keizan. According to this text, whenever anyone attained realization, Upagupta would place a talisman into a cave. The cave was filled with talismans, which represented the number of people who had achieved enlightenment. In literature, Upagupta is known for his association with King Ashoka and his role in Buddhist mythology. His legend has been retold and adapted in various forms of media, including poetry and art.
