Lord Palmerston was a British statesman who twice served as Prime Minister during the mid-19th century. Dominating British foreign policy for most of his career, he held power when Britain reached its peak in influence. Known widely by nicknames "Pam" and "The Mongoose", he maintained government office almost continuously from 1807 until his death in 1865, launching his parliamentary career as a Tory before switching to the Whigs in 1830, and concluding it as the first Prime Minister of the newly formed Liberal Party starting in 1859.
