Lord Kinnaird, a Scottish aristocrat, built the family seat at Rossie Priory in Perthshire during his early years. Abroad for extended periods, he continually added to his father's impressive art collection. The patronage of prominent Scots from central Scotland, including Lord Kinnaird and several other influential families, significantly aided Thomas Campbell's burgeoning career as an artist. Born in Edinburgh but residing in Rome from 1819 until 1830, Campbell attracted numerous portrait commissions from wealthy fellow-Scots who were traveling on the Grand Tour of Italy.
