The British jurist Francis Jeffrey launched the Whig publication Edinburgh Review in 1802. Between 1803 and 1829, he dominated as editor and leading contributor, wielding immense influence over debates on art, politics, and science. As a harsh critic, he took aim at Wordsworth's circle, mocking them with the label 'Lake School'. It wasn't until later that Jeffrey came to appreciate Scott, Keats, and Byron's work, but his early critiques sparked Byron's scathing poem English Bards and Scotch Reviewers in 1809. In 1861, a marble bust of Lord Francis Jeffrey was acquired for the National Portrait Museum in London.
