As a gamer, maker, and designer at www.salient-tech.com, I'm a huge fan of modifying toys and games for more thrilling play. Sometimes you just need to make a Nerf dart fly faster or add glow-in-the-dark features to a toy just for fun. For those who love action-packed games, Hasbro reintroduced the classic Looping Louie last year with an epic Star Wars version called Loopin' Chewie. Gameplay is straightforward - Chewbacca flies in circles trying to knock over Stormtrooper tokens. You can defend your tokens by hitting a paddle that can launch the unpredictable Millennium Falcon away from your troopers and hopefully knocking out your opponents. If you're the last one with Stormtroopers, you win. The original Looping Louie was designed for 4 players, but with the reintroduction, the Star Wars edition was scaled down to 3 players. Although super fun, I wanted to make play even more engaging by converting it into a 6-player game. Supplies: 2 sets of Loopin' Chewie 3D printer The Conversion File How I Designed It: Using a photograph of the motorized base as reference geometry, I drew a clip attachment in a 3D CAD software called SolidWorks that would attach to an extra paddle. The base features vertical ridges that rise at an angle, so I was able to use those to position and hold the part securely. I measured the features on the original base using calipers to ensure my geometry was accurate. With one extra attachment complete, I simply patterned the geometry 3 times around the center of the motorized core. 3D Printing: With the 3D file ready, I 3D printed the part on our Formlabs 2 SLA printer using Tough Resin. This material was ideal since the part needs to flex over the base to fit into place, and it will withstand proper abuse when things get extremely competitive. The print took roughly 6 hours and can be seen finished in the machine with structural supports removed. Assembly: Clip the 6 Player Conversion over the base from the bottom. Since the print was semi-flexible, it can deform enough to clip over the angled base. The vertical ridges hold it perfectly in place. Attach the 6 paddles. Be cautious, though - it's still a 3D print and not as strong as molded plastic. Assemble 6 competitive Star Wars fans and get ready for battle. Play: Get ready because things are about to get crazy! If you only have 3 players, you can operate a paddle with each hand... Not easy.
