Numenius americanus The long-billed curlew is a bird found in North America and is recognized as the largest known shorebird or sandpiper. The genus name "Numenius" translates to "the new moon," referring to its almost crescent-shaped beak. Their curved, extending beaks are used for digging deep into sand and rocks to find prey such as hidden eggs, crabs, mollusks, and insects. After mating and laying eggs, the female leaves the male in charge of caring for them within 2-3 weeks. It does not mean she will not breed with him again the following year, however.
