These shims allow the user to mount a real London Underground Metropolitan Line A-stock luggage rack to their wall.

The London Transport Museum sells recommissioned luggage racks - which are replicas from the 1960's Metropolitan Line A-stock (the only tube trains to have luggage racks, so far). However, these differ from the originals in some key ways that make them more convienient for home use. One of the modifications to the original design is that the mounting plates are now flat, as opposed to curved to fit the profile of the wall of a tube train.

However, the London Transport Museum also sometimes has stock from old decommissioned trains from the London Underground for preservation, and occasionally puts pieces of these trains up for sale to the public if they are not required for their preservation efforts.

If you purchase one of these original artifacts, you will find yourself in posession of a genuine piece of transport history with all of the wear and tear of daily use from millions of Londoners over the years. However, unlike the replicas, they are not conveniently installed into ones home (unless you happen to live in a tube train...) to be enjoyed.

These shims correct for the curvature of the mounting plates without needing to modify the rack at all, allowing it to securely be mounted against the wall. The 8 holes fit a standard 4.5mm screw - which you'll need at suitable lengths to pass through the shims and deep enough into the wall fitting (I'd recommend a Fischer UX-8 or SX-8 for masonry walls - use the most appropriate fixing for your wall).

Photograph of the interior of a London Underground A tube stock Metropolitan Line train at Baker Street station on 24 October 2005 by wikipedia user Chris McKenna (Thryduulf) CC-BY-SA 3.0

Print instructions

Print two of each model (making a total of 6 pieces), or use the platter I prepared (laid out for a MINI+)

Material: PLA (but PETG would probably be better)

0.2mm layer height

0.4mm nozzile size

Infill not very importantl

At least 4 perimeters! - to get the required strength

It's important that they are printed with the screw holes on the bed - this will be loaded in compression so best to spread this force over the layers rather than between them.

The bottom screw holes use the thin shim called Bottom.

The top screws use the larger Top Rear between the wall and the rack, then Top Front between the screw head and the rack (to allow the screw to compress the sandwich perpendicular to the wall).

It is a little tricky to find where to drill the holes - I'd recommend holding the shelf in the desired location (and ensuring it's level) taping the shims onto the shelf, and tracing around the outlines of the shims - then using each shim to mark the location of the hole with a pencil without the shelf in the way.
