Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (November 19 [O.S. November 8] 1711 – April 15 [O.S. April 4] 1765) was a Russian polymath, scientist and writer who made major contributions to literature, education and science. His discoveries included the atmosphere of Venus and the Law of Mass Conservation in chemical reactions. Lomonosov's areas of expertise were natural science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, optical devices and others. He was also a poet who influenced the development of modern Russian literary language. A bust is a sculpted or cast representation of the upper part of the human figure, depicting a person's head, neck and variable portion of the chest and shoulders. The piece is normally supported by a plinth. These forms recreate the likeness of an individual. They can be made from any medium used for sculpture, such as marble, bronze, terracotta or wood. A parallel term, bust, represents the upper part of an animal or mythical creature. Sculptural portrait heads from classical antiquity are sometimes displayed as busts. However, these are often fragments from full-body statues or were created to be inserted into an existing body. The artist behind this sculpture remains unknown.
