Logitech Formula Vibration Feedback Wheel - Hysteresis Fix

thingiverse

This part is an option to fix the hysteresis problem with the Logitech Formula Vibration Feedback Wheel. That wheel is a discontinued low cost PC gaming steering wheel by Logitech that suffers from hysteresis: it doesn't read exactly the same position to the software when you steer to one side and then back to exact same physical position. This makes steering very imprecise. The problem seems to be that the position sensor is attached to the wheel case with too flimsy attachment that allows it to wiggle a bit. When you turn the wheel, the sensor housing moves around, which influences the readings, which makes steering very imprecise and unrepeatable. The solution is to fix the sensor in place more rigidly, which is what this part tries to accomplish. There are other suggested fixes on the internet, such as gluing the sensor down with a hot glue gun. I haven't tried them, because I wanted to try reversible modification first, so I made this shim. Instructions: 1. Print in a rigid plastics, PLA works for me (Polycarbonate should work also, but PETG or softer plastics migth be worse) 2. Carefully disassemble the wheel by unscrewing the screws at the bottom. You should see a position sensor. See the attached image installation.jpg. 3. Sand the inside of the prongs of the shim down to make the shim fit around the position sensor. The fit should be as tight as possible to ensure good immobilisation, but not too tight in order not to cause the sensor to be damaged or its axis to be bent while installing. 4. When tight fit is achieved, attach the shim with some adhesive tape as shown in the photo. The shim should be fixed in place and should not have a play if you try to move it a bit. 5. Reassemble and test. The wheel shoud feel more precise and usable in the games (it's still a low cost wheel, so don't expect miracles). My wheel actually became enjoyable to use with this part, 12 years after I bought it. DISCLAIMER: This part is provided in hope that it will be useful, but I can't be responsible for any damage caused by installing or using this modification. Logitech and Logitech Formula Vibration Feedback Wheel are registered trade marks of Logitech.
