Here are some intriguing facts about the Locust Cocoon. The locust cocoon is a protective outer covering of the egg that surrounds it before it emerges as an adult locust insect. When locust eggs hatch, the female locust lays hundreds of her fertilized eggs within the ground to prevent predation. A hardened protective layer develops over the locust eggs to shield them from any predators or other threats that might come its way in order for the newly hatched baby locust insects to survive after birth. As time progresses, it gets dry out, shrinks and becomes very difficult to be penetrated which provides a perfect safe place for them to begin their new lives without worrying about dangers like birds, toads and snakes which feed on baby bugs all the time. The hardening process begins with water inside of locust cocoon which is slowly evaporating from tiny little pores which allows for protective layer growth and hardening over several weeks.
