Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird simplified cnc/laser
thingiverse
The SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest non-rocket-powered aircraft in existence, with a top speed that's unmatched by any other plane. Despite its incredible performance, only 20 of the 32 SR-71s built encountered enemy contact during their service years. My desktop CNC machine from Stepcraft helped me bring this iconic jet to life using 6mm beech plywood and a 1.2mm flute with a spiral-toothed cutting edge. The result is a sturdy and detailed model that's perfect for kids of all ages. For those looking to create smaller versions, a laser cutter could be an excellent alternative tool. Please note that the obj-file included with the model is primarily used for validation and viewing in a web browser. Designing This Model I began by downloading 3-view drawings of the SR-71 from Wikipedia to save time on tracing. Using Adobe Illustrator, I carefully carved out the main features of the plane. The slots were a result of trial and error, but they added a unique touch to the model. Before building the plane, I validated its design in SketchUp to ensure accuracy. Finally, I nested the parts as closely as possible for efficient production on my CNC router.
