The Lockheed SR-71 took to the skies as a premier strategic reconnaissance aircraft for the United States Air Force (USAF). This groundbreaking aircraft was the product of Lockheed Corporation's Advanced Design Development division, also known as Skunk Works, under the expert guidance of renowned aerospace engineer Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson. As the culmination of years of innovative research and development, the SR-71 brought a new dimension to the fleet of reconnaissance planes, known as Blackbirds (A-12, YF-12, M-21, and SR-71). What set this exceptional aircraft apart from its predecessors was its increased size, significantly larger fuel capacity, and a pioneering design that featured two cockpits: one at the front for the pilot and another at the rear reserved specifically for the reconnaissance systems officer. To date, none of the 31 SR-71s built have ever been downed by enemy fire, however twelve of these aircraft met their demise due to accidents during flight operations.
