The Lockheed L-1011 was engineered to bridge the gap between medium-haul airliners and the largest heavy jet airliners, positioning itself directly against the DC-10. This aircraft was extensively used by hundreds of air carriers on continental routes, throughout the western hemisphere, Europe, and Asia during its long service life beginning in the early 1970s. However, the L-1011 struggled with recurring issues related to RR engine availability and maintenance concerns. Despite these challenges, it boasted a better safety record compared to the DC-10.
