I recently constructed a mechanical counter purely to understand its internal mechanisms, so this project explores how a simple lock operates. Typically, a mortise lock embedded in a door features a latch activated by turning the handle and a deadbolt that can be secured or released with a key. For this project's purpose, I removed the latch and utilized a single lever to operate the bolt. I integrated this into a container's lid, resulting in a secure storage compartment for small items. In the accompanying image, the bolt is depicted as green while the lever appears red; when the key is inserted and turned, it first disengages the lever from its locked position with the bolt before continuing to rotate, ultimately moving the bolt into its secured state. Once secured, the cap can be rotated 30 degrees counterclockwise and removed from the container.
