This is more of a conceptual idea for anyone to take and then go forth and conquer your own children. Sole purpose of the design was to stop my child from locking me out of the house, bathroom, his room... really any space with this style lock. However, I still wanted my toddler to be able to open the door making the standard childproof lock ineffective. I'm not claiming originality or novelty. Simply a post/guide for other parents out there to follow in case they haven't thought of a solution. I wouldn't include a design file, but Thingiverse requires it. I can't blame them; that's the point. Also notable, I've had a 3D printer for a whopping 2 weeks. There may be better ways to do this than what I have below. But for a novice with a problem, it worked. God Speed, parents! Print Settings Printer Brand: Creality Printer: Ender 3 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2 Infill: 20% Filament: TECBEARS PLA Black How I Designed This =================== Took front and profile pictures of the lock. Imported them into Fusion 360 as canvas and scaled them appropriately. Design the Lock Block for your knob and aesthetics. Made a sketch matching the contour and thickness of the middle mechanism. Then rotated it about the center axis and cut the center hole out of the body for the mechanism. Obviously, this process won't work for every style doorknob and your flow may be different, but it allows for creativity. Test Print. Depending on your knob you might need to adjust settings for it to be more pliable. I chose a rather thick top and bottom which will become evident in the next step. Fit. Once the general shape worked, I heated up the surface that would touch the knob with small propane torch. Be careful not to melt the PLA--or burn yourself--you only want to soften it. Quickly afterwards I pressed it against the doorknob. This molded it to that specific doorknob as we are in a rental and each knob is... special. Hold it in place till it cools a bit, maybe 30 seconds. Add double sided tape on it and put it back on the doorknob. Trimmed the tape with an exacto knife after it was on. I tried doing it before I put it on with scissors, but the tape lost its adhesiveness fumbling with it and found the knife method was better. MASS PRODUCE! We've had these on for a couple weeks now and although he could probably rip them off, they are a big enough deterrence he doesn't mess with them. Success! Category: Household
