By opting for PLA, I discovered that objects with short layer times greatly benefited from a fan directly at the extruder. Greg Frost's Lm8uu X Carriage with Fan Mount usually fulfilled this need for most parts. However, when printing thin layers with short layer times, the side opposite the fan could still be messy. To overcome this issue, I added a fan on the other side. To mount a 40mm fan on either side using m3 screws and nuts, I followed instructions. This modification increased the width of the X carriage by approximately 18mm if a 10mm thick fan was used. However, I successfully moved my build platform to compensate without losing any build volume.
