
LM393 Optical Filament Runout Sensor

This is a simple sleeve that fits over an optical sensor that allows you to insert Capricorn tubing (~4mm outer diameter) on either side to turn it into a filament runout sensor. I had some LM393 Optical Speed Sensors laying around leftover from a robotics build that I was doing a few years ago and decided to repurpose one into a filmament runout sensor. I am using the SKR Mini E3 board for the Ender 3, so I plan to connect the 5v from the SPI header to the VCC pin on the module, GND to GND on the E0-Stop connection on the SKR, and D0 on the module to the PC15 on the E0-Stop connection on the SKR. Then, I'll search for the latest information on updating the firmware to support it (I'm using Marlin 2.0). Your firmware changes will depend on your main board, your firmware version, and the wiring. D0 is the signal pin from the sensor. Search ebay for "slot type IR optocoupler speed sensor module LM393" to find the optical sensor that I used. This takes about 12 minutes to print on draft settings. FilamentRunout2.stl has a slightly larger hole for the Capricorn tubing.
