The specimen originated from a quarry on Town Mountain Granite near Marble Falls, Texas. The rock is rich in mafic minerals and many areas within the quarry consist of rocks similar to this one. However, most of the quarry lacked such high concentrations of mafics. Does this qualify as a true "granite"? The presence of quartz, plagioclase, and potassium feldspar along with biotite-rich mafic zones in the sample is notable. Nevertheless, do these proportions fall within the typical range for granites? Furthermore, does the abundance of mafic minerals justify altering the rock's name?
