Squamates encompass a massive assortment of reptiles with more than 6,000 diverse species dispersed throughout the globe on every continent save for Antarctica, and most oceanic island chains. This extensive group is known to be paraphyletic due to its failure to account for snakes and Amphisbaenia, certain species of lizards actually having closer ties to these omitted groups than they do to other reptiles. These squamates exhibit varying lengths spanning the width between minuscule chameleons and geckos just a few centimeters in length to the 3-meter long Komodo dragon, known for its massive size. Many of these reptiles employ a side-to-side movement when moving around on all fours, though others abandon their legs altogether to adapt into lengthy, serpent-like bodies. Several examples such as forest-dwelling Draco species boast the capability of gliding effortlessly through the air. Reptilian territorial behavior is observed within certain species with males often fiercely engaging other male rivals while simultaneously utilizing striking displays featuring brilliant color schemes to capture potential mates and repel perceived adversaries.
