Livia Drusilla, also known as Julia Augusta from AD 14 onwards, was a devoted and influential wife of Caesar Augustus who played a crucial role in advising him on matters of state. As her efforts to secure the imperial succession for her son Tiberius led to the deaths of many rivals, including Marcus Claudius Marcellus, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, Agrippa Postumus, and Germanicus, she earned a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Born on January 30, 58 BC, Livia was the daughter of Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus, an adopted son of the tribune of 91, Marcus Livius Drusus. She married her cousin Tiberius Claudius Nero and in 42 gave birth to their son Tiberius, who would eventually become emperor. Her second marriage to Octavian (later Augustus) was arranged early in 38 when she was still pregnant with her second son, Nero Claudius Drusus. Livia's power and ambition often put pressure on her husband Tiberius after his accession as emperor. He refused to carry out the terms of her will and even forbade her from accepting certain honors. However, her grandson Claudius deified her in 42, and surviving portraiture confirms her reputation for dignified beauty.
