Liverpool Cenotaph

This is a cenotaph, a monument built to honor individuals whose remains lie elsewhere. It's a rectangular stone block on a stone base, featuring low-relief bronze sculptures of marching troops and mourners on its sides. Designed by Lionel Budden with carvings by Herbert Tyson Smith, it commemorates the victims of World War I, with the addition of World War II dates later. The inscription reads: East: To the men of Liverpool who fell in the Great War, and that day's victory turned to mourning for all people. West: As unknown yet well known; as dying, behold we live. Out of the northern parts...a great company and a mighty army. North and South: 1914 - 1919 / 1939 - 1945 Added to the east face in 2001: And all who have fallen in conflict since.
