Lithophanes with a thickness of up to 4 millimeters can be stood upright. The sides are opened wide enough for larger lithophanes to fit inside comfortably. A 4-millimeter lithophane fits snugly, though some extra force is needed to push it in place - gentle pressure works well as an alternative.
