The SyncLip is an innovative assistive technology that empowers individuals with limited hand mobility, including quadriplegics, to interact seamlessly with touchscreen devices using a mouth-operated sip-and-puff joystick. This user-friendly device enables people to control on-screen cursors with minimal head movement, allowing them to independently send text messages, make phone calls, and explore the web. The SyncLip is compatible with most Android and Windows phones and tablets, as well as all laptops and desktops. We are excited to release this device open-source, making it possible for communities to create their own versions of the SyncLip at an affordable cost of less than $300, including electronic components. By doing so, we aim to make assistive technology more accessible and inclusive. In addition to its primary function, the SyncLip can also be used as a joystick for gaming with computers or the Xbox Adaptive Controller, opening up new possibilities for users with disabilities. With different firmware, the device can be customized to suit various needs and preferences. As of October 2019, iOS13 supports on-screen cursors, allowing the SyncLip to be used with iPhones and iPads. This update has further expanded the device's compatibility and usability. The SyncLip project is proudly supported by Google.org, Vancouver Foundation, and the Government of Canada, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting accessibility and inclusivity.
