The East and Zen Temple was founded in 1910, a year of great change for Japan. It is part of the Cao Dong sect, one of the most influential schools of Buddhism in the country. The pair of stone lions that now sit outside the Kannon Hall are particularly impressive. They were once placed at the entrance to the temple grounds and bear an inscription in elegant calligraphy: "Senzai Arai Tairi." This is the signature of a wealthy entrepreneur named Arai Tairi, who was active in Taiwan's business community during the early 20th century. He earned the nickname "Finance King" for his numerous business ventures. The stone lions themselves are notable for their unique design. Both male and female figures have open mouths and eyes that are nearly level with the mouth, giving them a somewhat comical appearance.
