The Lion of Venice, an ancient bronze winged lion sculpture in Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy, symbolizes the city and St Mark after its 12th-century arrival. Its history dates back to about 300 BC when it might have been a winged lion-griffin statue on a Sandon monument in Tarsus, Cilicia. It later came to represent the "Lion of Saint Mark" and is accompanied by St. Theodore of Amasea on the western column. The current sculpture consists of parts from antique statues, with the original kept in the Doge's Palace.
