Lion-griffin horned vase
myminifactory
This vase, modeled after a drinking horn ending in the head and paws of a lion-griffin, served as a fountain decoration where water flowed from a hole between its front paws. A frieze featuring Maenads adorned the rim of the horn. The work closely replicates on a smaller scale the vase signed by Greek artist Pontios housed at the Capitoline Museums, which itself was derived from a metal prototype. Created towards the end of the 1st century BC.
