myminifactory
The Christopher Columbus Monument stands tall at 60 meters in Barcelona's La Rambla area. It was built for the 1888 Universal Exposition, honoring his journey to the Americas. The monument commemorates Columbus' report to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V after his first trip to the new continent. At its base is a circular structure, measuring 20 meters in diameter, made of freestone and standing 1.2 meters above the ground level. Four staircases, each six meters wide, lead up to the monument. Flanking these staircases are four bronze lions sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana and cast by Wohlguemut. Each lion bears a signature: "a. wohlguemuth, ingeniero constructor.barcelona.1887".
